Salt Dough Junk

This was a Christmas gift for a friend of mine. It took forever to finish, but I was so happy with the results. Just look at that glorious penis.

It's salt dough on a foil base. The details were done with a toothpick, and the whole thing was painted over with acrylic paint.

The Grease Stain Experiment

As I mentioned way back in September, I believe set-in grease stains to be the bane of all laundry. I had experimented with multiple methods to remove a very old grease stain from one of my favorite shirts. None of the methods I had tried effectively removed said stain.

Next on my list was the WD-40 method, which involves the popular water-displacing spray as well as Dawn dish soap.

I said I would post the results, so here we have it:

Behold, my poor grease-stained shirt.

Step 1. Spray stain with WD-40.

A little goes a long way here, so if it looks like you sprayed enough chances are you already sprayed too much. To make things easier on myself I put a piece of cardboard inside the shirt so the WD-40 wouldn't bleed through.

Let the WD-40 sit for 20 minutes or so. After your 20 minutes is up, you'll notice the WD-40 has spread considerably. This is what I meant when I said a little goes a long way.

Step 2. Rub your Dawn dish soap into the WD-40.

Use your Dawn liberally and be sure to extend well over the edges of the WD-40, otherwise you might have a new grease stain on your hands.

(Note: In the above picture I did not use enough soap! I added more shortly after taking the picture)

Step 3. Rinse thoroughly.

I tossed mine into the washing machine and ran it through the rinse cycle.

Step 4. Put more Dawn on the stain, then wash laundry as usual.

RESULTS: Positive! Grease stain is no longer detected.

I can't believe it! The process sounded kind of like an old wives tale, but much to my surprise this actually worked! Now, I have no idea if all of the steps are necessary. I suspect I could have done without steps 3 and 4. The rinsing and re-Dawning are probably superfluous, but all-in-all the process worked far better than I ever could have expected.

First Entry: An Experiment.

Hello. I'm Thur, and I am one of them creative types. I'm dirt poor, unemployed, and severely in debt. I love to bury myself in creative tasks, like drawing, sculpting, painting, etc. I wouldn't go so far as to call myself especially skilled (I do have a knack for drawing, I suppose) but I enjoy making things and that's all that counts. Unfortunately, being broke it means I'm forced to get inventive when it comes to finding art supplies.

I taught myself how to recycle paper so I'll have plenty of paper to sketch on. I collect plastic grocery bags to melt together for sewing materials. I save soda can tabs, bottle caps (plastic AND aluminum) and I try to do as much as I can from scratch. It saves me money and it gives me a HUGE sense of accomplishment once I'm done.

That gives you an idea of what my creative life is like these days.

This first entry is a bit of an experiment. It's not so much a creative project as it is an experiment in thriftiness.

When you're as broke as I am, nothing is more horrifying than pulling your clothing out of the dryer and realizing one of your few items of clothing has a (now set-in) grease stain. They're the bane of the laundry world and a real pain to remove.

Once a stain is set-in, it's almost impossible to get it out. Usually people just throw out the stained article of clothing and get something new. I can't exactly afford to do that. Besides, that would be giving in, wouldn't it?

I just so happen to have a few articles of clothing with set-in grease stains. It is my intention to wage war against these grease stains and reclaim what's mine!

After doing some research, I found an excellent resource for home remedies and various thrifty fixes for common household conundrums. If you haven't bookmarked Barefoot Lass's Hints and Tips yet, I suggest you do so now. It's an extensive archive of helpful hints and tips a thrifty person might require.

Now, on Barefoot Lass's stain removal page, there's a whole section dedicated to the horror that is the grease stain. I've tried a few of their suggested solutions to no avail.

Rubbing Alcohol did not remove my set-in stain, nor did Dawn dish liquid. Fear not, though. I hear this method is still good for pre-treating a new stain before washing. My stains are already set-in.

Next I will be trying the WD-40 method:

"If you have a set in grease stain, just spray the stain with WD-40 and let it sit about 20 minutes. Then, rub a dollop of liquid dish detergent (Dawn is a good one) onto the WD-40 stain and rub in well. Rinse and smear on a bit more dish detergent and then wash as usual"

With any luck this will work. Wish me luck.
